Case Binding is the most common type of binding for hardcover books and is reserved primarily for projects intended to have a longer shelf life, and requiring a finer presentation. The interior text pages are printed and folded in similar fashion to a perfect bound book, but are bound together by smythe sewing the individual signatures together, thus adding a superior strength to the binding. The spine of the book block is then flattened, a strip of cloth added to the spine, and endsheets are applied. A hard cover is then attached to the endsheets. The spine of a case bound hard cover book can be square or rounded, and there are grooves along the edges of the cover near the spine. Case bound books often have protective and decorative dust covers or jackets.
Typical projects utilizing Case Binding include:
- Anniversary and Commemorative Publications
- Educational Curriculum
- Family History Books and Journals
- Fine Books for Bookstores
- Prestige Publications
- Special Directories for Businesses and Organizations
